Marylebone History & Location

The name Marylebone dates back to the 14th Century, when a new church was built in the area and it's name was shortened from St Mary's by the Bourne. The area has not always had such an atmosphere, as it used to be the site of the Tyburn Gallows where London's public executions took place for more than 400 years. Marylebone also contains Harley Street, formerly situated on land owned by Edward Harley, the 2nd Earl of Oxford. The street developed in kind with most of the streets in the area, but now houses some of the most exclusive Medical Doctors, Dentists and Plastic Surgeons in the world.

The Southern border of Marylebone is Oxford Street which stretches for 2 miles through the heart of the West End with Marble Arch at one end and Tottenham Court Road at the other. Oxford Street was so named as it was an old Roman road which joined London with Oxford.
