Mayfair History

This most prestigous of areas within London was named after the Fair which took place every May up until the 1760's.

Mayfair has long been associated with societies of learning and Burlington House is the home to some of the most prestigious. The Royal Academy of Arts, the British Astronomical Association, the Royal Astronomical Society, the Geological Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Linnean Society of London are all to be found in Burlington House.

Excavations in the area have shown that Mayfair was the junction of many Roman Roads, linking Londinium as it was known in the Roman era, to other major cities like modern day Oxford.

Later in the 17th century, Mayfair was re-developed and many of the buildings which exist today were constructed and were inhabited by those wishing to be close to St. James' Palace.

Areas within Mayfair like Bond Street have been popular throughout history and it was in the middle of the 18th century when the area became a haven for the eager shopper.
