Soho Estate Agent: Property For Sale & Rent In Soho, London W1Soho HistoryPrior to the Great Fire of London in 1666 Soho was almost entirely made up of fields (hence the name Soho Fields) with a few farm buildings In 1650 there were only about sixty cottages in Soho, these were in the vicinity of Wardour Street, then named Coleman Hedge Lane. Hunting is rumoured to have been enjoyed and the name Soho is derived from a hunting cry. The Great Fire in 1666 destroyed much of the City of London, and this neccesitated the building of houses on available land at Soho Fields. Originally all this land was owned by Westminster Abbey and so many of the better-off citizens of the City now made homeless by the fire, began to build on the land north west of St.Martin in the Fields. It was within easy reach of the three royal palaces of St. James, Whitehall, and Westminster. During the eighteenth century Soho continued its change from primarily a residential area to one of business and commerce . Golden Square began to be occupied by doctors and solicitors, and some of the houses turned into hotels and boarding houses. Soho was bombed during the second world war, and the Parish church of St.Anne was badly damaged. Bombs landed in Old Compton Street,Shaftesbury Avenue, and Great Marlborough Street. The modern day London map shows the boundaries of Soho as Oxford Street to the north, the southside of Leicester Square to the south Charing Cross Road to the east and Regent Street to the west.
